چکیده
BACKGROUND The prognostic significance of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the context of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) of cancer of unknown primary (CUP) origin is unclear. METHODS Patients treated for CUP at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre between 2001 and 2013 were stratified by p16 status and retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS Of the 73 patients included, those with p16-positive tumors (63%) had less advanced nodal status (N1-N2b; 52% vs 89%; p = .035) and less aggressive treatment. Patients with p16-positive tumors had improved 3-year disease-free survival (DFS; 79% vs 56%; p = .012) independent of nodal status and treatment in multivariable analysis (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.27; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.08-0.95). CONCLUSION Among patients with CUP, p16-positive status is an independent predictor of DFS but not overall survival (OS). © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Head Neck, 2016 © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Interactions between clinical factors, p16, and cyclin-D1 expression and survival outcomes in oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.
BACKGROUND P16 and cyclin-D1 are cell cycle proteins commonly dysregulated in head and neck carcinoma. We assessed their expression, clinicopathological variables, and overall survival (OS) in oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). METHODS Clinical characteristics and p16 and cyclin-D1 expression were evaluated in 101 patients with oropharyngeal SCC and 75 patients wi...
متن کاملIncidence of Etiologic Factors in Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Head and Neck in Ahvaz
Introduction: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common head and neck malignancy. Smoking, alcohol consumption, viral infections, exposure, oral hygiene, and dietary, genetic, and occupational factors are the most important etiologic factors. The aim of this study was determining the incidence of etiologic factors in head and neck SCC. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectiona...
متن کاملCyclin D1 Expression in Patients with Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Background & Objective: Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is considered to be one of the most common cancers of the head and neck, accounting for roughly 90% of all malignant tumors of the larynx. To have a timely diagnosis for a better and practical therapy, molecular markers have to be investigated. The aim of this study was to determine the expression of Cyclin D1 (CD...
متن کاملp16 status, pathologic and clinical characteristics, biomolecular signature, and long-term outcomes in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas of unknown primary.
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to report associations between p16 status, clinicopathologic characteristics, and outcomes for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma of unknown primary (CUP). METHODS Specimens of squamous cell CUP were reanalyzed. Human papillomavirus (HPV) status was determined by p16 stain. A tissue microarray (TMA) was constructed to evaluate biomarkers potentially...
متن کاملEvaluation of Tissue Expression and Salivary Levels of HER2/neu in Patients with Head and Neck Squamous cell Carcinoma
Introduction: HER2/neu, a member of the epidermal growth factor receptor family, has been shown to be over-expressed in some tumors. The purpose of this study was to determine the salivary levels and tissue expression of HER2/neu in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and their correlation with clinicopathologic parameters. Materials and Methods: Enzyme-linked immu...
